 Course Description & Objectives:

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with Qur’ānic Arabic. This 12 week course will introduce students to Qur’ānic vocabulary, grammar, and elementary level tafsīr (exegesis).  Additional materials will be introduced regularly to aid students in their learning process while simultaneously reinforcing online learning. By the end of the course, students will have a good command of Qur’ānic vocabulary, grammar, and a better understanding of the shorter chapters of the Qur’ān. Our hope is to enable devotees to have better comprehension of the Qur’ān during both, prayer and devotional recitation. 

The minimum requirement for this course is knowledge of the Arabic alphabet and its pronunciation.

Intermediate Classical Arabic (4 quarters)

Course Description & Objectives:

Students in the intermediate level must have prior knowledge of the basic grammar and selected vocabulary list covered in the elementary level.  The focus of this course will be to have strong command of classical Arabic grammar – syntax and morphology, a wider repertoire of vocabulary, and an emphasis on reading authentic text with comprehension from the classics, including the Qur’an and Hadith.   

Objectives:

  • Have expansive repertoire of vocabulary
  • Read authentic material with higher fluency and comprehension.
  • Emphasis on foundational Arabic grammar.
  • Mastery of the ten morphological forms

al-Ājurrūmīyyah: a classical Arabic primer on syntax

Course Description & Objective:

This course is intended for students with foundational knowledge of Arabic grammar or at least one year of Arabic.  Al-Ājurrūmīyyah is a classical Arabic primer on the science of syntax. It was written by the great Moroccan master Abū ‘Abdallāh Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Dāwūd al-Ṣanhājī (D. 723 AH), known as Ibn Ājurrūm. The text is very short, concise, and succinct. Serious students of the Arabic language and sacred Islamic sciences are highly encouraged to commit the text to memory. This course is a pre-requisite to qaṭr al-nadā and taṣrīf al-‘izzī.

Taṣrīf al-‘Izzī: a classical primer on Arabic morphology

Matan al-ʿizzī is a classical introductory text on Arabic morphology. Its author, ‘Abd al-Wahhāb b. Ibrāhīm b. ‘Abd al-Wahhāb al-Zanjānī (d. 655 AH), is said to have composed it in 652/3. There are numerous commentaries on al-Zanjanī’s taṣrīf al-‘izzī, the most widely used and circulated being that of Masʽūd b. ‘Umar al-Taftāzānī (d. 791 AH), who is said to have authored it at the young age of 16. The text has been taught and studied throughout sacred learning centers in the Muslim world.
